Гетерохроматин, образующий плотную, хорошо окрашиваемую зону, занимающую центральное положение в хромоцентре chromocenter, не политенизируется; термин «» предложен Э.Хейтцем в 1934 при анализе политенных хромосом дрозофилы Drosophila virilis; у многих дрозофил -Г. и -гетерохроматин трудно дифференцируемы.
